2.5. New Jersey Geographic Information Network#

  1. Go to https://njogis-newjersey.opendata.arcgis.com/ or https://njgin.nj.gov/njgin/

  2. Search for “parcels mercer”, this will return the parcels/lots informaiton of mercer county in NJ. Choose the “Parcels and MOD-IV of Mercer County, NJ (fgdb download)” to download.

  3. Extract the zip file and you can open the gdb file in qgis.

2.5.1. Download Digital Elevation Model (DEM)#

  1. Go to https://njogis-newjersey.opendata.arcgis.com/documents/99d0ebdf713446e68ffaf9dfddad0869/explore or search for DEM at the njgin website.

  2. Install AWS CLI (https://docs.aws.amazon.com/cli/latest/userguide/getting-started-install.html#cliv2-linux-install)

  3. Download the state wide DEM with the following command

    aws s3 cp s3://njogis-elevation/derived_products/statewide_2021/Statewide_10ft_DEM_2021/ /your/path/on/local/computer/ --no-sign-request --recursive

  4. Import the DEM into qgis Layer -> Add Layer -> Add Raster Layer

    • specify the *.img file to be imported into qgis

2.5.2. Download DVRPC 2015 Lidar Files#

  1. Go to https://njogis-newjersey.opendata.arcgis.com/documents/99d0ebdf713446e68ffaf9dfddad0869/explore

  2. Scroll down to DVRPC 2015 and open the tab.

  3. If you have sufficient storage space of 1.1TB you can bulk download the file by following the instruction.

  4. Due to storage and time constraint I advise doing a download by tile approach. Click on the “DVRPC-2015 LIDAR tile grid” to go to the map interface.

  5. In the map interface, search for the location you are interested in and zoom to that.

  6. Choose the tile you want to download by clicking on it.

    • A dialogue box will appear, scroll to the download link parameter.

    • click on the link to download the las file.

2.5.3. Download Impervious Surface Mapping of New Jersey#

  • Three classes of impervious surfaces–buildings, roads, and other impervious.

  • The negative areas can be assumed to be where the greens and water areas are.

  • When combined with LIDAR file, it is possible to estimate the tree heights of an area.

  1. search for impervious surface at the NJGIN website

  2. Download the file and import it into the GIS of your choice.

2.5.4. Download the Mod-4 Parcel files#

  • Basic information in regards to property location.

  • used for property tax assesment.

  2. Download the file (gdb recommended) and import it into the GIS of your choice.

2.5.5. Download Road Network of New Jersey#

  • information of the public road network of New Jersey

  • there are two sets of data

    • road network of New Jersey - does not include smaller roads

    • road centerlines of New Jersey - more detailed

  1. Search for “roadway network” at the NJGIN website.

  2. Download the file (gdb recommended) and import it into the GIS of your choice.
